Going The Extra Mile: Turning Everyday Service into Meaningful Impact
By Obedi S. Laiser - Managing Director & CEO, Absa Bank Tanzania
Every
customer has a story, and every interaction we have with that customer becomes
part of that story.
It
may be a small business owner looking for capital to grow, a parent saving for
a child’s education, a young professional taking their first steps towards
financial independence, or a Tanzanian living abroad looking to invest back
home.
At
Absa Bank Tanzania, our promise is simple: Your Story Matters.
Behind
every transaction, enquiry, application or complaint is a person with
ambitions, challenges and expectations. For us, banking is therefore not only
about products, processes or transactions. It is about people, their journeys
and the role we can play in helping them move forward.
That
is why this year’s Customer Service Week theme, Going the Extra Mile,
resonates strongly with us.
Going
the Extra Mile does not always require a grand gesture. More often, it is found
in the small things we do consistently well — listening carefully, responding
promptly, explaining clearly, solving problems and taking ownership until the
customer receives the outcome they need.
It
is the branch colleague who takes extra time to understand a customer’s needs.
It is the relationship manager who follows through on an important request. It
is the contact centre adviser who remains patient while resolving an issue. It
is also the operations, technology, risk and support teams working behind the
scenes to ensure the customer’s experience is seamless.
Customers
may not always see all the people involved, but they experience the outcome. And
those outcomes matter.
When a business receives the right financial support, it can grow, create jobs and contribute to the economy. When a family receives timely assistance, important plans remain on track. When a customer feels heard, respected and valued, trust grows.
That is where our purpose comes to life: Empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together… one story at a time.
Culture
must be experienced by the customer
At
Absa, going the Extra Mile is also closely connected to the cultural
transformation we are continuing to drive across our organization. We are
deliberately strengthening a culture that places the customer at the centre of
how we think, act and deliver. This means moving from internal focus to
customer value, ensuring that we consistently ask ourselves what value our
actions create for the customer.
It
means moving from completing processes to owning outcomes, because
completing a task is not enough if the customer’s need remains unresolved. And
it means moving from settling for “good enough” to consistently pursuing
excellence and raising the standard of service we provide.
Culture
is ultimately experienced by the customer.
It
shows up in how quickly we respond, how well we collaborate, whether we take
ownership when something goes wrong, and whether we are prepared to go beyond
the minimum required to find a solution.
Our
customers experience one Absa. They do not see our departments,
reporting lines or internal processes. They experience the collective outcome
of how effectively we work together.
This
is why customer service cannot be the responsibility of frontline teams alone.
It is the responsibility of every colleague across the Bank.
Combining
innovation with the human touch
Customer
expectations continue to evolve.
Today’s
customers want banking that is fast, simple, convenient and increasingly
digital. At the same time, they still expect empathy, trust and genuine human
connection.
Our
responsibility is to bring these together — technology and human connection,
efficiency and empathy, innovation and trust.
As
we continue improving our products, platforms and ways of working, we must
ensure that progress translates into a better experience for the customer.
For
us, Customer Service Week therefore cannot be something we celebrate for a few
days and then move on from.
The
Extra Mile must increasingly become part of how we work every day — how we
listen, how we respond, how we solve problems, how we take accountability and
how we continuously improve.
A
thank you to our customers
As
we mark Customer Service Week 2026, I would particularly like to thank our
customers for choosing Absa Bank Tanzania and for continuing to trust us with
your ambitions, businesses, families, and financial journeys.
We
do not take that trust for granted.
Thank
you also for your feedback, both when we get things right and when you
challenge us to do better. Your experiences help us learn, improve and
continuously raise the standard of service we provide.
To
my colleagues across Absa, this week is also an opportunity to recognize the
many people who go the Extra Mile every day, including those whose
contributions happen quietly behind the scenes.
But
it must also challenge us.
Our
commitment should be to make the Extra Mile more than a theme.
It
should become part of our everyday standard ,how we listen, how we respond, how
we take ownership, how we create value and how we pursue excellence.
Because
every customer has a story.
Every
interaction becomes part of that story.
And
every one of us has an opportunity to make that story better.
Your
Story Matters.
