Absa Champions Women’s Financial Empowerment Through Financial Literacy
Absa Bank Tanzania Product and Channels Manager, Ms. Devroda Kagusa, delivers a presentation on women’s financial empowerment during a one-day financial literacy seminar titled “Women & Wealth: Road to Financial Freedom,” organised by Accelerate Women and principally sponsored by Absa Bank Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
FOR many women, earning an income is only the beginning of the journey towards financial independence. Understanding how to save, invest and make effective use of financial services can determine whether that income translates into long-term financial security.
This was the message emerging from a women’s financial literacy clinic held in Dar es Salaam under the theme “ Road to Financial Freedom”, organised by Accelerate Women and sponsored by Absa Bank Tanzania.
Speaking at the event, Absa Bank Tanzania Manager for Products and Channels, Ms Devroda Kagusa, said financial knowledge was essential in helping women make informed decisions about their finances.
“We at Absa take pride in supporting such events. Today’s event provides an opportunity for women to learn, get informed and make informed decisions on using financial services that can enhance their financial inclusion,” she said.
Ms Devroda women’s financial journeys were consistent with Absa’s brand promise, “Your Story Matters,” adding that the bank recognised the contribution of women engaged in various productive and entrepreneurial activities.
She said financial freedom was not simply about having money, but also about having the knowledge and ability to use financial services effectively to meet personal and business needs.
“Absa is fully committed to and inspired by initiatives such as this, which give women an opportunity to learn about financial services that can enable them to take charge of their financial affairs,” she said.
She pointed to Absa’s SHE Account as an example of a financial product designed to respond to women’s specific needs.
Meanwhile, Accelerate Women Director Ms Bernice Fernandes said the organisation had identified financial and investment knowledge as an important area requiring greater attention among women.
“Research showed that women lack knowledge of how to invest their money. This is what informed our decision to hold this clinic,” Ms Bernice said.
She said the training was intended to help women make better financial decisions, develop effective saving habits and invest prudently.
“This enables them not only to improve their own financial wellbeing but also to contribute towards Tanzania’s economic growth,” she said.
Accelerate Women Board Member Ms Monica Hangi said women controlled significant amounts of money but often lacked adequate knowledge about suitable investment opportunities.
She urged women to acquire financial knowledge that could help them turn their income and savings into sustainable investments and grow their capital.
